Blow flies, known for their metallic appearance in black, green, or blue hues, are larger than typical house flies. They produce a distinctive buzzing sound and are attracted to decaying meat, where they lay eggs. Depending on the species, the development from larvae to adults can take between 7 and 15 days. They are often spotted around garbage, animal waste, and decomposing organic matter, making them a concern for homes and businesses.
In Southern California, the Oriental latrine fly, a type of blow fly, has been a known pest since 1989. These flies gather near trash areas and shady spots during the summer. Larvae near buildings can enter homes, maturing into adults and becoming a nuisance. Keeping trash contained and cleaning up waste can help control blow fly populations.
The little house fly (Fannia canicularis) is easily recognized by its zigzagging flight in open areas, rarely landing on food, unlike common house flies. This reduces the chance of food contamination.
Little house flies lay eggs in decaying vegetation, compost, or waste from animals like rabbits and chickens. Their life cycle, spanning 24 days, progresses from egg to adult. Although they can be bothersome, their tendency to thrive in decaying matter minimizes their impact on indoor environments.
Muscina stabulans, or the false stable fly, is a bit bigger and sturdier than the common house fly. Its dark gray color sets it apart. Unlike its biting counterpart, the true stable fly, this fly does not bite. However, it can find its way indoors and lay eggs on spoiled food.
The larvae are commonly found in decaying plant matter and animal droppings. The life cycle of this fly lasts about 14 days. Though it doesn’t bite, its presence can be irritating, especially when eggs are laid inside homes. Knowing its patterns helps control the problem more effectively.
Black garbage flies are small, shiny black insects about 1/5″” long. These slender pests thrive in garbage waste, especially in rural areas with inconsistent trash collection. While they aren’t often seen in large numbers around homes in bigger cities, they can be more common in areas where waste management practices are lacking.
With a life cycle of about ten days, these flies reproduce quickly in garbage. Proper waste disposal is a key factor in reducing their numbers.
Stable flies may look like house flies, but they have pointed beaks that can pierce the skin, allowing them to bite. They live outdoors, feeding on animals such as cattle and horses, but they will bite humans, especially during wet weather when they come inside.
These flies are more than just irritating; they are a common problem for pets and livestock. Stable flies thrive in environments with damp, decaying vegetation, manure, and urine-soaked hay. Implementing proper waste management practices, including regular disposal of waste, can help curb their population.
Flesh flies (Sarcophaga species) are larger than your typical house fly and feature a unique checkered abdomen. They are generally gray with black stripes across their thorax. Rather than laying eggs, these flies deposit live maggots. These maggots thrive in decaying flesh, spoiled meat, and animal waste, such as dog droppings. Flesh flies are frequently seen around dead animals and decaying snails.
The life cycle of flesh flies can be completed in as little as eight days. These flies are commonly found near decomposing organic matter. If you notice slow-moving flies with checkered abdomens, you could be dealing with a flesh fly problem.
At Fair Oaks Pest Control, we focus on thorough inspections to identify fly breeding sites around your property. Our team examines problem areas like garbage disposal zones, drains, and areas with standing water or decaying matter, searching for signs of drain flies, blow flies, and more.
We also evaluate your plumbing to rule out potential issues such as leaks that might attract flies. Using advanced equipment, we detect larvae and adult flies in hidden spots. This detailed assessment enables us to create a tailored treatment plan that effectively addresses the fly infestation.
To help us effectively address the fly problem, make sure the indoor and outdoor spaces are cleaned before our technician’s arrival. This allows for a more accurate assessment of the infestation. Our team will inspect the property to determine the severity and look for potential plumbing issues that could worsen the situation.
When dealing with drain flies, we use targeted products to eliminate larvae and adult flies in the drains. We treat areas around food prep zones but avoid spraying directly on those surfaces. Fly traps are placed in key locations to control the population.
Fair Oaks Pest Control offers reliable monthly fly control services. Our technicians will inspect your property to identify key areas where flies breed, such as drains, waste areas, and still water, ensuring early prevention.
We use environmentally responsible products to eliminate flies, including drain flies and stable flies, providing long-lasting results. With our regular visits, you can rest easy knowing your space will remain free of flies throughout the year.
